After falling out of love with their previous home, Matthew and his wife Caitlin (alongside their two beloved pooches) decided it was time for a change, switching their traditional, 150 year old house to a brand new Kirkwood home.
Earlier this year, the couple moved into their beautiful new 3 bedroom detached ‘Potarch’ at our thriving Balgillo Heights development in Broughty Ferry.
We caught up with Matthew to find out how they are settling in, what attracted them to our Balgillo Heights development and what they love most about their new home…
What options were you considering when you decided it was time to move house?
What attracted you to our Balgillo Heights development?
“We stumbled across the Balgillo Heights development quite randomly; we were driving to my mum’s house and saw one of the signs outside the development which immediately caught our attention. It was a very spur of the moment situation but we went into the development to have a little nosey and that's where it all started.
“Before visiting the Kirkwood showhomes, we had only viewed two other new builds over the past five years or so, alongside seeing a couple of our friends’ new homes. When we went to visit the Kirkwood showhomes, the size of the rooms and use of space really impressed us compared to the others we had seen. There is a much higher standard throughout the homes, particularly the style of doors in each room - it was one of the main features that stuck in my head once leaving.
“After that, everything happened very quickly, within a couple of weeks or so we’d paid the deposit and our old house was officially on the market.”
The buying process all went very smoothly, the speed and accuracy of the responses from the Kirkwood team were really impressive and we loved working with Tom.

What is it like living in Balgillo Heights?
“We absolutely love it! The location is perfect as we’re only 5 minutes away from everything we need and couldn’t ask for much more. Broughty Ferry is only two miles away from us and has so many amenities, such as restaurants, supermarkets, local shops, pharmacies and more.
“There are also lots of walks within the local area many of which are within walking distance or only a short drive away which is ideal for us taking the dogs out. The development itself is also only 5 minutes away from the countryside which is perfect for getting outside and exploring!
“It's clear there is a strong sense of safety within the development as there are always people going about, whether that be with their dogs or kids. The community aspect of the development is also great, there’s a Facebook group for all the residents to keep up with any upcoming events or activities and stay in the loop of what's going on.”
What do you love most about your new home? Do you have a favourite feature?
“The quality of the build is superb - far better than any that we’ve seen previously. We didn’t have a garden in our last house and we knew that would be one of our non-negotiable features due to the dogs. The garden in our new home is very generously sized, especially when compared to many other new build homes and is perfect for our two dogs.
"Another thing that stood out to us was the appearance of the home both inside and out, as I feel sometimes new build houses tend to lack character but this was certainly not the case when it came to our new home.
“My favourite part of the house would probably be the living room, as it's such a large space. It’s got two patio doors with long windows on either side which lets in a lot of natural light. During the summer, we love opening up the French doors to the garden and letting in some fresh air - it's great!”
Have you noticed any differences between your new home compared to your old house?
“Yes definitely, it's so much easier to keep the heat in our new home - we barely have to put the heating on. When we do, it's only for a short period of time, yet the house stays warm for hours! It really is a massive improvement from our last home and with the insulation, new boiler and PV panels on the roof, this has really helped to reduce our energy bills overall.”
