A look into Catherine and Malcolm’s first home together in Balgillo Heights

4 Bedrooms

Catherine and her partner Malcolm were on the hunt for their first home together, and with Catherine’s son and Malcolm’s two daughters also moving into the property, space and privacy for the young adults was an important consideration for their purchase.

Having grown up in Broughty Ferry and living in the area for 25 years, Catherine and Malcolm were eager to stay local, which narrowed down their options when searching for their dream home. They decided to look for a new build that they could personalise according to their own taste, and the couple fell in love with the 4 bedroom detached ‘Tummel’ housetype at our sought-after development in Broughty Ferry - Balgillo Heights.

After both selling their own properties, the family moved into their new shared home in September 2023. We caught up with Catherine to find out what they love most about their new home in Balgillo Heights and how they found the buying process with Kirkwood Homes...

What attracted you to the Tummel housetype?

“We wanted a fresh start for our first home together so buying a new build made complete sense, and it was important that we found the perfect home to suit our blended family. We knew that a home with 4 bedrooms was essential as it was important that the kids had their own rooms, which led us to visit their Alford development and ‘The Tummel’ showhome.

We absolutely fell in love with it and were immediately impressed with the craftsmanship of the home. The second ensuite in the property was the ultimate decider for us, as this allows the girls to have their own bathroom and my son also has his privacy. Not only was the ‘Tummel’ in our ideal location, but it was also a well designed, quality home - and we took some decor inspiration from the beautiful showhome!”

What stands out to you about your new home?

“One of the reasons we decided on Kirkwood as our chosen house builder was because of the quality and attention to detail that goes into their homes, and that has to be the main thing that stands out about our ‘Tummel.’ The house is so bright and spacious for a new build and everything has been finished to such a high standard.

“Another thing we really appreciated after moving in was the quality of the kitchen. Having lived in separate houses for a while, cooking and eating dinner always felt rushed and neither Malcolm or I spent a long time preparing meals. Thankfully, the kitchen in our new home has had the opposite effect and has encouraged us to spend more time cooking and socialising at meal times with the family. We’ve added stools at the breakfast bar which has separated it from the dining table, allowing us to use this as a more formal space for hosting, something we love to do!

“I’m also a keen gardener and I was particularly impressed with the garden, especially for a new build home. Before moving in, we had the back garden turfed to avoid any mud and mess being trailed into the house over winter, but I’m really looking forward to getting started on some garden design as the warmer weather rolls in - and we already have plans to build a seating area and summerhouse next year. We have lovely french doors with a patio area outside, and with the garden itself being south facing this is sure to be a sun trap in summer 2024!"

Balgillo has a really fresh, safe and relaxed feel about it. There are great play parks for kids to play in and other grassy areas dotted around which are perfect for chilling out with the family.

What do you like about living in Broughty Ferry?

“You’ve got everything on your doorstep! There are accessible transport links into Dundee which has had so much time and investment put into it as well as great shopping facilities, then a couple of miles up the road from our house there are cows and horses that graze the fields nearby, providing the area with a more rural feel - giving you the best of both worlds.

“There is also a fantastic high street with shops, cafes, pubs and a beach that are all within a half hour walk as well as beautiful walking paths. We’re looking forward to exploring these more next year!"

What is your favourite thing about the Balgillo Heights development?

“Where do I start? Balgillo has a really fresh, safe and relaxed feel about it. You can tell that it’s been thoughtfully laid out and there are great play parks for kids to play in and other grassy areas dotted around which are perfect for chilling out with the family. Despite being the biggest Kirkwood development it feels open and spacious, and the sense of community here is fantastic."

How was the buying process with Kirkwood Homes?

“Selling 2 houses in order to buy one together has its stresses and we were anxious about the potential things that could have gone wrong, but we felt extremely lucky that everything went smoothly. Kirkwood was so supportive throughout the whole purchasing process which was fantastic.

“The Kirkwood team also provided us with a walkround of our new home two weeks before moving in which was great. They gave us time to look around and encouraged us to have some time in the house by ourselves to take pictures, which made us even more excited to move in!

“Every member of the Kirkwood team that we came into contact with was extremely helpful and we couldn’t be happier with our new home!”
