Kirkwood homeowners Alicia and Diderik were searching for a home with additional space to accommodate their growing family - which led them to consider our prestigious Inchmarlo development in Banchory. With a one-year-old son, another baby on the way - and a beloved pooch, finding their next home was of high importance.

Having previously bought a Kirkwood three-bedroom Craig at Countesswells, they decided to part exchange their lovely home and upsize into a four-bedroom Lyon at our Banchory development – a move that offered them the perfect blend of space, quality and community.

We recently caught up with them to hear more about their homebuying journey, what they love about their new home and their latest experience with Kirkwood Homes…

What options were you considering when moving home?

“When we found out I was pregnant again, we knew we needed more space. We spent around six months looking, constantly checking ASPC. I’m originally from Torphins and Diderik is from Maryculter, so we always knew we wanted to stay close to family. We did consider Torphins briefly, but we were pretty set on living in Banchory – we absolutely love it here. The schools are great and it’s only 10 minutes away from family.

“Initially, we considered an older home, but with life being so busy, we realised that having a new build again would be so much easier. As we already owned a Kirkwood home, this was the only new development we looked at! It just made sense – it’s warm (which is important because I hate being cold), and with the part exchange option, the process was so much smoother for us.”

What do you love most about your new home?

“We absolutely love our new home – it’s perfect for family life. The kitchen area is a real highlight for us; it’s bigger than what we had before, and we spend a lot of time in this space together as a family. The breakfast bar is great, and the finishes, appliances and worktops are all such high quality. We wouldn’t change a thing – the carpets, the doors, the windows, everything is beautifully done.

“The house itself looks spectacular and is a great size for our family. We have four big bedrooms and a spacious upstairs landing with a nook that we’ve been able to use as an office without sacrificing a bedroom – which we love. The garden is also a fantastic size and the whole house is so warm and well-insulated; it really holds the heat.”

“The area is perfect – we’ve got a boy already and another on the way, so it’s great knowing they’ll have the freedom to go out on their bikes, run a bit wild and just enjoy being kids.”

What do you like about living in Banchory?

Living here has been fantastic. I’ll be going off on maternity leave soon, and there’s so much going on – it really is a welcoming community. I go to the library on Tuesdays, the GP is very friendly, and everything we need is right here. We love all the woodland walks with the dog, the friendly atmosphere and how safe it feels, especially for the kids. My friends are nearby too, so it’s easy to meet up for a coffee on the high street.

What stood out to you about living at the Inchmarlo development?

“Coming from Countesswells, which was a large development made up of various builders, we really wanted to move to an area that felt more intimate. Inchmarlo really stood out because it doesn’t feel overcrowded. Some other newbuild developments can feel quite compact, whereas the Kirkwood homes have plenty of space between them, which gives us privacy while still having neighbours close by.

“One of the things we love most is that at the back of our house, there are beautiful woodlands, so we aren’t overlooked at all. The community here is also great. There’s a real mix of people – lots of young families like us, but also people who are retired. It never feels too busy, and because it’s not a massive development, it has a really nice balance of being social but peaceful.”

How was the buying process with Kirkwood Homes?

"The whole buying process with Kirkwood Homes was fantastic – everyone was so friendly and patient with us. It all happened really quickly, in just under two weeks, and having Aberdein Considine as our solicitor, who Kirkwood already worked with, really helped move things along smoothly. It was also lovely that they remembered us from our previous home at Countesswells.

“Our site manager, Melvin, has been great – we’ve had him for both houses and he’s always been quick to sort any minor issues out. The process has changed a bit since our last home – it’s all done through an app now, which makes things really easy.

“Overall, we’ve felt really lucky as Kirkwood have been brilliant. The team is always responsive, and even when we called them out because we thought a switch was broken – but it turned out we just hadn’t switched it on – they were so polite about it! No judgement, just a friendly ‘have a nice day!’ That level of service really makes such a difference.”
