Life in Sauchen: A conversation with Moira, Sales Advisor at The Brambles

12th Aug, 2025

At Kirkwood Homes, we know that finding the ideal place to call home is just as important as choosing the right house. That’s why we are delighted to introduce you to Moira, Sales Advisor at our Brambles development in Sauchen, and a proud resident of the village herself.

Having made the move from Westhill, Moira brings both professional expertise and personal experience to her role, making her the ideal person to guide buyers through the journey of purchasing at The Brambles. We sat down with her to talk about Sauchen, life in the village and what makes it such a special place to live.

Can you tell us a little about yourself and your role?
“My name is Moira and I’m the Sales Advisor for Kirkwood Homes at The Brambles in Sauchen. My role is to guide clients through the process of purchasing a brand-new home - from the practical steps of buying to helping them understand all aspects of moving into a new-build.”

What prompted you to move to Sauchen from Westhill?

“Our children had all grown up and moved out, and we had always dreamed of living a more peaceful lifestyle. Sauchen felt like the ideal location as it’s surrounded by beautiful countryside, yet still close to family, friends, and amenities.”

How would you describe day-to-day life in the village?

“Life here is peaceful and community-focused. We don’t have children of school age, but there’s a safe, dedicated walkway to Cluny School, which makes the school ‘run’ lovely for local families. We do have small grandchildren, and one of our favourite things to do is take them to the popular playpark on the Main Street.”

Are there any stand- out perks living in Sauchen?

“One of the biggest perks is that house prices are lower, so your money goes a lot further, yet it’s just a short drive from Westhill. Sauchen is also well connected to nearby villages like Monymusk, Midmar, Dunecht, Kemnay and Alford, where you’ll often find rural events and community activities to enjoy.”

How easy is the commute to surrounding areas?
“It’s very straightforward. Westhill is just under 15 minutes by car, Aberdeen is around 35 minutes (though we tend to take the train from Kintore) and Alford is 15 minutes away. It’s an ideal balance of countryside living with excellent access to the city and towns nearby.”

Why is Sauchen a great place for families?

“It’s quiet, safe, and welcoming, with a real mix of people - from young families to older generations. It has a lovely multi-generational feel, which creates a strong sense of community.”

What do you personally enjoy most about the local community?

“I really enjoy being connected to the rhythm of farm life! Whether it’s plowing in spring, lambing, hay bailing or the ‘hairst’, it’s all around!”

Do you have any favourite local spots for coffee or peaceful walks? Have you found any hidden gems?

“Castle Fraser is a favourite of mine. It’s about a 40-minute walk, and the grounds are perfect for a picnic or a stop at the National Trust café - and if you head to Alford, there’s no shortage of options for coffee and treats, although I have to say, I love The Bistro’s coffee!”

What are your top three reasons for loving life in Sauchen?

“For me, it’s the quiet nature of the village, the abundance of wildlife and countryside all around, and the fact that everything we need is still just a short drive away.”

How do you use your own experience to help buyers at The Brambles?

“When people are considering a move, there are a lot of questions about lifestyle, location, and amenities. Because I live here myself, I can speak from the heart and can answer any questions genuinely about the local area and the lifestyle to expect in Sauchen.”

Finally, what advice would you give to anyone considering The Brambles and life in Sauchen?

“Sauchen is a quiet village surrounded by beautiful countryside, with a welcoming, family-focused community. The Brambles has already attracted many young families who’ve embraced country living. For those with older school children, there’s a bus service to Alford Community Campus for ease. Above all, I’d say come and see it for yourself! The Brambles offers high-quality homes, and you might just find that your dream family home is within reach here.”
