Get your wheels turning on country roads straight from your front door

28th Aug, 2019

The thrill of the open road, that cool breeze washing over you as you take in the fresh country air and stunning north-east scenery – it is easy to see why cycling is becoming increasingly popular.

With there being nothing but sea to the east of Aberdeen, all roads lead west when it comes to getting out and about on two wheels, and Kirkwood Homes’ fantastic Countesswells development offers the perfect starting point for those who love nothing more than getting out and about.

For many cyclists, the prospect of taking to the congested roads around the city is about as appealing as suffering a puncture in the pouring rain. But while many will choose to avoid tackling the busy streets due to the potential risk of injury, others simply just don’t enjoy navigating through traffic.

There are few routes for those who prefer exploring the countryside that can be enjoyed literally from the second your wheels hit the tarmac. That’s the beauty of our Countesswells development, which is on the edge of the north-east’s newest town. Imagine waking up in your brand new luxury Kirkwood Home and being able to hop on your bike and enjoy the nature that the area has to offer.

Heading west from the town along the road to Blacktop has been a favourite route for cyclists for many years, and with the introduction of the AWPR, it has become a road less-travelled for those in motor vehicles – making it ideal for those who prefer pedal power.

The short journey takes you past Blacktop along to Easter Ord, but be prepared to experience lots of twists and turns – along with a few hills! At the end of that road you can join the Peterculter-Carnie roundabout route, where there is a decision to be made. A left-turn can take you down to the Deeside village, where within a few minutes you can be on the sedate Old Deeside Way and heading west towards Banchory and beyond.

However, if you want something a bit more challenging (and faster) without people out for a walk slowing your pace, a right turn can take you out towards Garlogie and the labyrinth of lanes in the area between North Deeside Road and the road to Torphins. The quiet country lanes are the perfect place to unwind while at the same time challenge yourself with a variety of tricky bends and braes. They are also the perfect place to learn how to deal with road cycling, which could in-turn help boost your confidence before trying out other, farther-flung routes.

While that is just one option for getting out on your bike, there are plenty more available, and you will discover more as you negotiate the back roads of the north-east. Coupled with plenty of woodland walks, Countesswells really is the place to kick-start your active lifestyle – or kick you into having one!
